BRIDLE CLUB AND SADDLE CLUB
Bridle Club
Bridle Club is now a weekly casual session held on Saturday afternoons for children from 2 to 8 and is also open to older children and adults who want to experience "bareback riding". It starts at 2pm and finishes with cordials and snacks at about 3.30pm. It includes approximately 20 minutes of riding and a hands on theory session. Price $45 per rider.
Saddle Club
Saddle Club also is a weekey casual session which starts at 2pm and finishes at about 3.30pm with cordial and snacks. It is for riders 8 and over including adults, who want to ride saddled horses. Saddle Club has approximately 30 minutes of riding time. Price $45 per rider.
HELPERS
At Riverside we recognize that children will learn to ride quickly if they are able to practice their new skills more than once a week. We also believe that just spending time around horses is very important for developing horsemanship skills. For this reason we have a "helper" system in place.
Once students have reached a level of competency (as determined by Liz or Jenny) they are invited to come in as "Helpers"
Helpers are involved in demonstrating to other students all skills involved for preparing a horse for riding and also assisting them during their ride. The helpers quickly become familiar with the daily requirements of caring for horses. Helpers also get valuable supervised riding time when they come to help out.
Duration and conditions
Helpers are required to pay for one group or private lesson each week.
If helpers are unable to come for their regular lesson time they must pay on the day that they come to help.
- Helpers should have their own hard hats, riding boots, jodhpurs and shirts with sleeves and collars. Jodhpurs and boots should be worn when helping other riders.
- Helpers for weekday afternoon sessions need to arrive by 4pm and stay till 6.30pm
- Helpers should be ten or older. However, we regard competence, experience and attitude as more important than age so some 9yos help on Saturday mornings.
- Helpers should be able to catch, groom, saddle, rug and clean up after their horse without assistance. They also need to be happy, competent riders who can control their horses at walk, trot and canter in the menage. Senior helpers, who may be invited to ride as a group leader in another lesson, need to be able to control their horses at all four paces.
- Helpers need to be prepared to spend more time helping other riders and looking after horses than riding themselves - they are encouraged to improve their riding by riding different horses, if a suitable horse is available - helper rides are a privilege not a right.
- Helpers on Saturday must arrive by 8.30 am or to stay on until 5.30pm if they want to be included in the helper riding sessions*. Helpers are welcome to come and help for a few hours in the middle of the day but they may not be included in rides.
